Case Study - Dental Implant

Case Study – Dental Implant

Process Utilize – Stereolithography (Somos 14120 Resin)

The Objective

To produce Surgical Aids to assist in the planning of dental implant surgery.

The Challenges

To produce a Stereolithography Model that fell within a very tight tolerance envelope. The placement of the hole for drilling during the surgery, had to be within +/-.0025 from its XY location. This needs to be verified and a report generate before the part was shipped.

The Solution

Hi Resolution Stereolithography with a .003” layer slice was used to produce the STL file that was sent to us by the client. Because the most important feature was the placement of the hole the client request that the models be a “strip & ship” finish. This means that all the supports were removed but they were not sanded away to show that the models geometry has not been modified.

After the model was post processed the location of the hole need to be verified. This was done via 3D Laser Scanning and comparison software. This process could be semi automated because the shape of the model did not change dramatically.
